What “independent” means

IMD is not owned by, and does not work exclusively for, any insurance company. We hold appointments with multiple carriers and managing general agents (MGAs), and we take each client's account to the markets that fit it. Our recommendation follows the client's needs, not a sales quota. We do not underwrite, issue, or pay claims on policies; insurers do.

How we use technology

We built our own tools because the industry's were slow. In practice that means: AI-assisted intake that reads the documents you already have — loss runs, driver and equipment schedules, prior policies — so you don't retype them; market selection driven by public safety data, carrier appetite, and your loss history rather than habit; submissions to multiple carriers in parallel rather than one at a time; and a service platform that issues certificates and endorsements and tracks renewals.

• Contractors — trade and general contractors, with New York Labor Law exposure handled and certificates that hold up.

• SaaS & technology startups — tech E&O, cyber, D&O, EPL, built around enterprise contracts and investor requirements.
• Group captives — feasibility review and placement for well-run companies paying roughly $150,000+ a year in casualty premium.

How we work

A quote starts with a short conversation and the documents you already have. We review the loss history and exposures, submit the account to multiple markets, and present the options side by side — limits, deductibles, exclusions, and price — with a plain-English recommendation. After the carrier binds, we coordinate filings, issue certificates, process endorsements, help with audits, and stay involved when there's a claim.

We tell clients what we won't do, too: quote a number before we've seen the loss runs, call a quote “bound” before the carrier confirms it in writing, or sell a limit a contract doesn't require and the client doesn't need.

How we're paid

We are usually compensated by the insurance company that issues the policy, as a commission based on premium. The amount varies by insurer and coverage, and we may be eligible for additional compensation based on the volume or profitability of business placed. For captive placements we may be compensated by captive managers, fronting insurers, or reinsurers. If we charge a separate broker fee, we disclose it in writing before you agree to it. Where we're licensed

IMD Insurance Agency LLC is licensed as a property and casualty insurance agency in New York (license # NY license # — fill in) and holds non-resident licenses in states — fill in. We can only quote and place coverage in states where we and our producers are licensed.
